Saturday 8 September: Industrial action affecting Northern Rail Services

Industrial action is likely to cause significant disruption to rail services provided by operator Northern Rail on Saturday 8, 15, 22 and 29 September.

A number of Northern services are expected to not run and any that do operate, working to a revised timetable, will be extremely busy.

The strike runs between 00:01 and 23:59 on Saturday 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 September. Please plan your journey in advance before you travel and take a look at our travel advice page.

Sunday 9 September: Sale Sharks v Worcester Warriors

Sale Sharks host Worcester Warriors in the Gallagher Premiership Rugby at 3pm on Sunday 9 September.

The road and motorway network around the stadium can get busy as there are other large venues (Trafford Centre and Old Trafford) close by.

Fans travelling to the AJ Bell Stadium are advised to plan their journeys and allow additional time to get to and from the game.

Manchester and Salford Inner Relief Route improvement works 

Major road improvement works, on one of the busiest routes in and out of Manchester and Salford, has started. The work will last for 12 months and will have a major impact on journey times. Buses

If you’re travelling by bus this week visit our online Route Explorer, which puts information on services and timetables at your fingertips.

Greater Manchester has an extensive bus network and bus operators have told us about the following works and events taking place this week, which will affect services. Please visit your operator’s website for more details.

Manchester

Improvement works are currently taking place on the A57 Regent Road between M602 roundabout and the Water Street junction. The Manchester & Salford Inner Road Relief Scheme (MSIRR) will last for 12 months and affects the 33, 63, 70, 73, 79, 255, 278, 291, X50 and MT1 services.

Shudehill/Withy Grove is closed at junction with Dantzic Street until Sunday 9 September. This is affecting the following services: 8, 10, 27, 42, 49, 59, 67, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98, 100, 135, Metroshuttle 1&2.

Berry Brow will be closed from 10pm on Thursday 6 to 6am on Friday 7 September. This will affect the 172 service.

Stevenson Square will be closed to traffic on Sunday 9 September which will affect the Metroshuttle 2 service.

Bolton                                                  

Hulme Road, Kearsley, is closed until Tuesday 11 September affecting the 512, 712 and 796 services.

Bury

There are temporary weekend road closures in place on Parkhills Road until October 2018. These closures will take place from 7am to 8pm and will affect the 93, 97 and 467 services.

Oldham

Marlborough Drive will be closed at the junction of Turner Avenue from Monday 10 to Monday 24 September. This will affect the 151 and 396 services.

Stockport

Stockport Road in Romiley is closed between Beech Lane and Guywood Lane until Saturday 8 September (10pm-6am). The 383 and 384 services are affected during this period.

Tameside                     

Ashton bus station is partly closed while construction work continues on the new interchange. Bus services will continue to run, but some bus stops will be temporarily relocated in the bus station or on nearby streets. The bus station Travelshop and the Ashton-under-Lyne Metrolink stop will operate as normal throughout construction. You can find out all the relevant information, including where you can get your bus from here.

Turner Lane is closed until Tuesday 11 September. The 331, 332, 338, 393, 395 and 396 services are affected.

Trafford                               

Village Way and Trafford Wharf Road are currently one way and Mosley Road is closed at the junction with Village Way as part of the Trafford Park Line works. The following services remain affected: 19, X50, X58, 250, 291 and 293.

Ashley Road, Hale is closed at the junction of Ashley Road and Langham Road to the junction of Willow Tree Road until Friday 14 September. The 287 and CAT5 services are affected.

 

Wigan

Church Street will be closed for one day on Sunday 9 September. This will affect the 352 service.

There will be a short road closure on Gerrard Street on Wednesday 12 September from 7.30pm to 12am. This will affect the 320 service.

Manchester Road will be closed for resurfacing on Sunday 9 September. This closure will take place from 7am to 5pm and will affect the 34, 126, 551 and 658 services.

Metrolink

Due to Network Rail improvement works at Victoria and Metrolink network expansion works on the Bury line, on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September some tram services will be replaced by buses.

Saturday 8 September

Buses will replace trams between Piccadilly and Bury from 11.50pm.

Buses will call at all stops except Market Street (use Piccadilly Gardens) and Shudehill (use Victoria). To see where to catch the replacement bus please click on one of the stops below:

Rail

Greater Manchester has a comprehensive network of rail services provided by private operators and run on the national rail network owned and managed by Network Rail. Operators have advised us of the following engineering works and changes this week.

Northern has re-introduced 75% of its removed services from May timetables, however not all services will be returning as per the original May 2018 timetable.

Northern Conductors Industrial Action –  Saturday 8 September

There will be industrial action taken placing on Northern Rail services on:

  • Saturday 8 September
  • Saturday 15 September
  • Saturday 22 September
  • Saturday 29 September

A limited, revised service will be in operation on key routes on these days between approximately 7am and 6pm. Further details are available from Northern Rail.

NW Electrification – Bolton Line,  Saturday 8 to Sunday 9 September

There will be no services through Bolton and beyond and no service on Atherton line to Wigan.

Buses replace trains between Manchester Victoria/Piccadilly and stations to Wigan/Preston.

Blackpool North to Manchester services will be replaced by bus between Manchester and Wigan North Western.

There will be a limited Wigan to Southport shuttle service.

Services travelling from Manchester Victoria to Kirkby will run between Kirkby and Wigan Wallgate only.

Services travelling from Manchester Victoria towards Blackburn, via Todmorden, will be extended to Clitheroe.

Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September

Arriva Trains Wales services travelling from Chester to Piccadilly will operate from Chester to Warrington Bank Quay, with an onward replacement bus service (not calling at Oxford Road).

Transpennine Express services from Manchester Airport to Glasgow/Edinburgh will be replaced by bus between Manchester Airport/Piccadilly and Preston.

Buses will operate from Manchester Victoria to Newton le Willows where rail services to Liverpool are available.

A bus replacement service will run between Manchester Airport, Piccadilly and Warrington Central on Sunday 9 September until 10:30am. Trains running before this time will only run between Warrington and Liverpool.  

TPE services to/from Scarborough/Newcastle will start/terminate at Victoria, where passengers are advised to use other operator’s services to Liverpool. TPE services from the Airport – North East will operate on diversion and not call at Oxford Road or Victoria.

Roads

If you’re travelling on Greater Manchester roads this week please be aware of a number of highways improvements and changes which could affect your journey.

Local authorities have advised us of the following scheduled roadworks and changes. For more information on the nature of works listed, please contact the relevant council in the first instance.

Motorways

There are a number of overnight closures associated with the Greater Manchester Smart Motorway upgrade works. Please see the Highways England project update webpage for details.

Manchester city centre

There are alternating daytime lane closures on Trinity Way between the junctions of Hampson Street and Irwell Street. At least one lane in either direction will remain open while these works take place. During this period there will also be alternating overnight closures to the NE and SW bound carriageways.

Shudehill will be closed at the junction of Withy Grove, near to the junction of Dantzic Street, from Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 September.

A lane closure will be in place on Oldham Road on the outbound only to the junction of Thompson Street until Friday 21 September. These works will be in place from 7:30am to 9:30am and 3:30pm to 6pm.

There will be a series of overnight closures on Corporation Street, between Todd Street and Long Millgate, from Tuesday 11 to Saturday 15 September. This closure will take place from 12:30am to 4:50am.

Bolton

There will be a lane closure in place on De Havilland Way (Horwich) from Chorley Road to the Parklands until Wednesday 12 September. These works will take place between from 9:30am to 3:30pm each day.

 

Oldham

Stamford Street and Rassbottom Street have multi way signals will be in place until Friday 14 December.

Lane closures will be in place on the A62 Oldham Road, close to the Wheatsheaf Pub, from Monday 3 to Friday 28 September for essential utility works.

Rochdale

Manchester New Road in Alkrington, from Victoria Avenue to the A576 Oldham Road, will have temporary signals until Sunday 30 September between the hours of 9:30am and 3.30pm.

Salford

There is a lane closure in place on Regent Road, from Gloucester Street to Water Street, until Friday 22 February 2019 for works being undertaken by Salford City Council.

Major works to improve Regent Road and Water Street will begin on Wednesday 29 August and are expected to last for up to 12 months.

During this period, work is being undertaken to improve six junctions:

  1. The junction of Dawson Street, Regent Road, Trinity Way and Water Street
  2. The junction of Regent Road and Ordsall Lane (Salford)
  3. The junction of Regent Road and Oldfield Road (Salford)
  4. The Mancunian Way, A56, A5067 roundabout
  5. The junction of Trinity Way and Hampson Street
  6. The junction of Hampson Street, East Ordsall Lane and Middlewood Street

There is a full closure will be in place on Mosley Common Road, between the A580 East Lancs Road to Chaddock Lane, until Monday 10 September.

A580 East Lancs will have lane closures in place at the Mosley Common Road junction every day until further notice.  Works will take place between 8am to 3pm on the outbound section and from 10:30am to 4:30pm on the inbound section. Weekend working will be in place from 8am to 6pm.

There will be a lane closure will in place on Bury New Road, near the junction of Knoll Street, from Sunday 2 September until the works are complete. The work will take place between 8am and 7pm.

Stockport

There will be a Lane closure in place from Monday 10 to Saturday 15 September on Buxton Road, between Corbar Road and Mile End Lane. This closure will take place from 9pm to 6am per evening only. 

Brinnington Road, from the junction of Gill Street to St Paul’s C of E school, will have temporary two-way lights from until late October.

Tameside

Turner Lane in Ashton is closed in both directions between Alexandra Road and Wellington Road until Tuesday 11 September.

There will be a lane closure on Ashton road at the junction with Worthington Way from Monday 10 to Friday 28 September. This lane closure will be in place from 7am to 7pm.

Trafford

There are a number of road closures in place for the construction of the Trafford Park Metrolink line:

Tenax Road is reduced to a single lane (southbound) for highway surfacing works.

Park Way Circle is down to one lane on the roundabout and approach roads.

There is a lane closure in place on Wharfside Way, near to the junction of Elevator Road, until Thursday 13 September. Works are taking place from 7amto 7pm.
